What does the cross of Christ to you? You really understand the message of the cross? It occupies his thoughts on some part of your day? This is the big theme of his life.
The shadow of the cross extended to the lost Eden to Calvary. She was seen in lambs slaughtered in the patriarchal and Jewish sanctuary services. The animal sacrifices pointed to the cross. The cross of Calvary, the Cross of Christ. All the work that Christ did, teaching and healing, He did the awareness that the world had come to the ultimate end to die for humanity.
The Bible states that Jesus prayed three times: "My Father, if possible let this cup pass from me" Matthew 26: 36-46. The Savior suffers intensely. The agony that dominates and does he sweat "like drops of blood." (Luke 22:44).
Right there in the garden Jesus is arrested and taken to religious leaders, that farce of a trial, sentence him to death. The Roman procurator ratifies the sentence. Then he is led to Calvary, nailed to a cross between robbers and raised.
What a awesome! The innocent Son of God suffering on a cross between common criminals! The very nature sympathizes with its author: the sun refuses to shine and thick darkness covers the region, the earth shakes and the rocks were rent asunder.
At the peak of His suffering Saviour exclaimed, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? "Matthew 27:46. This cry of Jesus come to feel abandoned by God.
The Bible states: "The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all." Isaiah 53:6. And in I Peter 2:24 we read: "Christ himself carried in his body on the cross for our sins, that we being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes you were healed."
Sin is rebellion against heaven itself and brings separation from God. Assuming man's sin, Jesus suffered what man has to suffer for having sinned, to be abandoned by God. This is the most tremendous experience that can befall a human being. The removal of God's presence. The consciousness of separation from the Father, and the sense of abandonment, wrapped in thick darkness and Jesus produced in him such anguish that will never be fully understood by man. This emotional pain far exceeded his physical suffering, and caused the death of Jesus in a few hours. He died of a broken heart.Jesus' death should not be seen as a mere historical event, to be kept on the books and remembered once a year.
His death should be celebrated every day by those who love the Savior.
On that dark day, Jesus atoned for the guilt of all our sins and opened the door of heaven for you and me. If you were the only inhabitant of the earth, Jesus would die, would make such a sacrifice of love, even if only by you.
I wish to invite you now to surrender your life to Jesus, as a gesture of love.
Give to Christ today, your heart. And He will see that his sacrifice was not in vain. This is the true meaning of the CrossCalvary. Is the message reaching the hearts of the cross.
It is for you!
